An alcohol tester, also known as a breathalyzer, is a crucial device for detecting the alcohol concentration in a person's breath. It operates based on the principle that the amount of alcohol exhaled is proportional to the alcohol level in the bloodstream.

Alcohol testers play a significant role in traffic safety. They help law - enforcement officers quickly and accurately determine whether a driver is over the legal alcohol limit, thereby preventing countless alcohol - related traffic accidents and saving numerous lives. 

Typically, when a person blows into the alcohol tester, the device measures the concentration of ethanol vapor in the breath. This measurement is then converted into an estimate of blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Different regions have specific legal BAC limits for driving. For example, in China, driving with a BAC of 0.02g/100ml or higher is considered driving under the influence (DUI), while 0.08g/100ml or above is classified as drunk driving.
